Iota Beta Chapter
Aaliyah Evans | Presiding President
Iota Beta Chapter was the first Southern California undergraduate chapter to be formed on one college campus from the original undergraduate chapter, Sigma. On Saturday, July 1, 1922, the Sigma Chapter was charted on the college campus of the University of Southern California by Marian Garrot Hall - a graduate of Fisk University. Sigma was the second undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® established in the Fantastic Far Western Region and served as a city-wide chapter for undergraduates in the Los Angeles area. At the chapter's establishment, the seven sensational members were Leola Lewis, Ursula Pruitt Murrell, Helen Wheeler Riddle, Corinne Stovall, Naida Portia McCullough, Ruth Prince McGregor, and Cody Jean Johnson. From 1922 until 1974, students from the University of Southern California held their membership in the Sigma Chapter. As interest in the sorority grew, so did Sigma chapter, and there was a need for a separate chapter to be started at the University of Southern California. With the help of Dr. Barbara Solomon, Marguerite Phillips, Cassandra Sims, Margaret McCauley, Andrea Mallet, and other graduate sorority members in the Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter, students at the University of Southern California successfully chartered the Iota Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® on Saturday, May 18, 1974 under the leadership of the 18th National President, Mattelia B. Grays, and the 13th Far Western Regional Director, Winifred C. Rhodes.
